Bute Building

Cardiff University

The Bute Building houses the Welsh School of Architecture and Cardiff School of Journalism, media and Cultural Studies. The original neoclassical building constructed in 1916 has had several additions over the years creating a network of small rooms. The University wish to renovate and upgrade the building creating more open spaces to improve flow and enhance the student and creative experience.

Platinum 3D Consultants laser scanned the building using both Faro and Leica laser scanners, plus a drone survey to capture inaccessible roof areas. The combined point cloud data was used to create an LOD3 Architectural Revit model to include basic MEP elements including radiators and major plant.

The data will be used by both the Architect and the University. BDP have been heavily involved in the application of emerging BIM technologies for over 10 years and understand the value of an accurate surveyed Revit model to inform the design process. The Architectural team and University also recognise the value of BIM through the whole building lifecycle and the importance of a surveyed model as the foundation of the BIM workflow.
