Adelaide House

London Bridge

Built between 1920 and 1925, Adelaide House, located adjacent to London Bridge, is London’s oldest skyscraper at 43m. Designed by Sir John Burnet & Partners the 11-storey steel framed office building was influenced by Chicago’s skyscrapers.

Under new ownership Adelaide House is undergoing a complete renovation, maintaining the Grade II listed exterior and updating the dated interior to meet the demanding needs of 21st century occupants.

Platinum 3D performed a comprehensive laser scan survey including a detailed lift shaft survey, plus service passage and junction with London Bridge. Data was processed to create an accurate registered point cloud – the starting point of the Scan to BIM Revit model. Platinum’s team created an LOD3 model of Adelaide House and LOD2 models of the surrounding buildings and bridge for planning context.

The LOD 3 model included all structural and architectural features modelled as parametric families. The Crittall windows are a distinct feature with many different types all modelled using family templates from Platinum 3D’s extensive family library. It was a requirement to limit model in-place families. The gently tapered exterior walls were particularly challenging. Each exterior wall and column on the front and side elevations were designed with a different taper. After discussions with the design team it was decided to model each wall using a sloped profile inserted into the wall family, allowing each type to be specified in the wall schedule.
